By Erica Hartley, Advanced Colonic Hydrotherapist
Colon Clinic, A New UConstipation is one of the most common digestive complaints I see in clinic, yet it is often misunderstood, ignored or self-treated with quick fixes that do little to address the underlying cause.
As an Advanced Colonic Hydrotherapist with over 14 years experience, I regularly support clients who have been struggling for months — and sometimes years — before seeking help. The good news is that constipation is usually manageable once we understand why it is happening and take a balanced, supportive approach.
What Is Constipation?
Constipation is not simply “not going every day”. Bowel habits vary from person to person. Clinically, constipation may include:
- Passing stools fewer than three times per week
- Hard, dry or lumpy stools
- Straining or discomfort during bowel movements
- A feeling of incomplete emptying
- Bloating and abdominal discomfort
If your bowel movements feel difficult, incomplete or uncomfortable, your digestive system may be under strain.
Common Causes of Constipation
Constipation is rarely caused by one single factor. In my experience at A New U, it is usually a combination of lifestyle, diet and stress.
1. Dehydration
Water is essential for soft, easy-to-pass stools. Without adequate hydration, the colon absorbs more water from waste material, leaving stools dry and hard.
2. Low Fibre Intake
Fibre adds bulk and encourages movement through the bowel. However, simply adding large amounts of fibre without hydration can sometimes worsen symptoms.
3. Stress
The gut and brain are closely connected. Ongoing stress can slow bowel motility, leading to sluggish digestion.
4. Lack of Movement
Regular physical activity stimulates the natural movement of the intestines.
5. Ignoring the Urge
Repeatedly ignoring the urge to go can disrupt normal bowel reflexes over time.
6. Hormonal Changes
Pregnancy, menopause and thyroid imbalance can all affect bowel regularity.
7. Overuse of Laxatives
Frequent stimulant laxative use can lead to dependency and reduced natural bowel tone.
Risks of Long-Term Constipation
Occasional constipation is common, but chronic constipation may lead to:
- Haemorrhoids
- Anal fissures
- Faecal impaction
- Increased bloating and discomfort
- Toxin reabsorption due to prolonged transit time
Persistent constipation may also be a sign that the digestive system requires deeper support.
If symptoms are severe, prolonged or accompanied by bleeding, unexplained weight loss or persistent pain, medical advice should always be sought.
Natural Solutions for Constipation
In clinic, my approach is always supportive and holistic. Rather than forcing the bowel, we aim to encourage its natural rhythm.
1. Hydration
Aim for adequate daily water intake. Warm water in the morning can gently stimulate bowel movement.
2. Balanced Fibre
Incorporate a variety of vegetables, seeds and whole foods. Introduce fibre gradually and alongside sufficient fluids.
3. Magnesium-Rich Foods
Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and bowel motility.
4. Regular Movement
A daily walk can significantly improve bowel function.
5. Establish a Routine
Try sitting on the toilet at the same time each day, ideally after breakfast, without straining.
6. Stress Reduction
Breathing exercises, mindfulness and adequate rest can positively influence gut motility.
The Role of Colonic Hydrotherapy
For some clients, colonic hydrotherapy can provide gentle and effective support.
At A New U, treatments are conducted in a safe, hygienic and professional setting. Warm, filtered water is introduced into the colon to assist the natural elimination process. Many clients report:
- Reduced bloating
- Improved regularity
- A feeling of lightness
- Greater awareness of their digestive health
Colonic hydrotherapy is not a replacement for medical care, but it can be a supportive therapy when appropriate.
Each client is assessed individually to ensure suitability, and I always work within professional guidelines.
When to Seek Professional Advice
If constipation is ongoing, worsening or accompanied by:
- Blood in the stool
- Severe abdominal pain
- Sudden unexplained changes in bowel habits
- Unintended weight loss
Please consult your GP promptly.
Supporting Your Gut for the Long Term
True digestive health is about consistency rather than quick fixes. By supporting hydration, nutrition, stress levels and natural bowel rhythm, long-term improvement is achievable.
If you would like personalised guidance or to discuss whether colonic hydrotherapy may be suitable for you, I am happy to help.
