What Your Bowels Are Trying to Tell YouAnd Why Your Gut Health Affects Your Whole Body

By Erica Hartley – Advanced Colonic Hydrotherapist & Vice Chair of the RICTAT Colonic Association

Your bowels communicate with you every single day. Yet for many people, symptoms such as bloating, constipation, sluggish digestion or irregular bowel movements are dismissed as “normal” or simply something they have learned to live with.

As an Advanced Colonic Hydrotherapist and Vice Chair of the RICTAT Colonic Association, I have spent many years supporting clients who are often surprised to learn just how deeply their gut health affects their entire body — from energy levels and mood to skin, hormones and immune function.

The truth is simple: your bowel habits are one of the clearest indicators of your overall health. When the colon is not functioning optimally, the body often struggles in ways that may seem completely unrelated. What Is Considered Healthy Elimination?

A healthy digestive system should ideally result in:

Regular bowel movements, often daily

Comfortable, complete elimination

Minimal bloating, discomfort or straining

A feeling of lightness rather than heaviness

Many people believe that opening their bowels every two or three days is normal, especially if that has been their pattern for years.

While this may be common, it is not always optimal.

When waste remains in the colon for too long, it can place extra pressure on the body’s natural detoxification pathways, particularly the liver, and may contribute to symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, hormonal imbalance and skin congestion.

Common Bowel Patterns and What They May Be Telling YouYour bowel habits can offer valuable insight into what may be happening internally:

Constipation

Often linked to dehydration, stress, low fibre intake, sluggish digestion or a suppressed nervous system response. Chronic constipation may also be associated with fatigue, headaches, skin issues and hormonal imbalance.

Loose Stools or Diarrhoea

May indicate inflammation, food sensitivities, stress-related nervous system overload or imbalance within the gut microbiome.

Bloating

One of the most common symptoms I see in clinic. Frequently caused by fermentation of undigested food, imbalanced gut bacteria, low stomach acid or eating while stressed or rushed.

Irregular Bowel Movements

Often a sign that the digestive system is struggling to maintain rhythm, commonly influenced by stress, disrupted sleep, hormonal changes or inconsistent eating patterns.

Why “Normal for You” Isn’t Always Healthy

One of the most common phrases I hear from clients is:

“This is just how my body works.”

The body is incredibly adaptable, but adaptation does not always mean health. Over time, symptoms can become normalised, masking underlying digestive imbalances that quietly affect the whole body.Digestive health is foundational.

When the colon is not eliminating effectively, waste products and toxins can be reabsorbed, placing additional strain on the immune system and other organs.

The Whole-Body Impact of Poor Gut Health

The colon does not work in isolation. When gut health is compromised, people may experience symptoms such as:

Low energy or chronic fatigue

Skin conditions including acne, eczema or dull skin

Hormonal imbalances

Brain fog or poor concentration

Reduced immune resilience

Mood changes, anxiety or low mood

Supporting bowel health can often lead to improvements far beyond digestion alone. How Colonic Hydrotherapy Can Support Gut Health

Colonic hydrotherapy is a gentle and effective way to support the natural function of the colon. It involves the controlled infusion of warm, filtered water to help soften and remove waste from the bowel.

In my clinic, A New U in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Just off the M1 Junction 35, colonic hydrotherapy(also known as colonic irrigation) is always approached holistically.

It is never viewed as a quick fix, but as part of a wider conversation around:

Hydration

Nutrition

Stress management

Nervous system regulation

Lifestyle and herbal support where appropriate

Many clients report feeling lighter, clearer and more comfortable after treatment, with improvements in elimination, energy and overall wellbeing.
